Mikko, how did you end up as an entrepreneur and designer?

I come from a family of entrepreneurs, so I grew naturally into that kind of a culture. I used to work at a carpenter’s workshop as early as a teenager, getting to independently carry out all kinds of things such as completing home and furniture renovations, clothing stores, interior designs for friends, etc.

In all the projects in my youth I had the chance to design and carry them out myself and realise my own vision. Hence, it can be said that I grew to be an entrepreneur through my own work. For me it has been easiest to realise my vision of my career via being an entrepreneur.

What are you like as an entrepreneur?

I’m persistent, relentless and brave. I’m not afraid to set the bar high. Once I have a strong vision of what to do, I keep pushing things forward no matter what.

What do you consider your greatest achievements?

Creating a comprehensive lighting collection is my greatest achievement. It has required a set of versatile skills and the creation of a vast network. I’m extremely proud of it.

Awards are important to me as well. It is great to receive recognition both in Finland (The Finnish State Award in Design) and internationally (multiple international design awards).

What is the biggest mistake you have made?

My biggest mistake has probably been the fact that I’ve underestimated how much effort and resources it takes to carry out effective sales and marketing. Luckily experience has taught me to do things better all the time.

What is your aim for Tunto Design?

To make Tunto Design a globally successful brand while continuing manufacturing our products in Finland.

Who is your role model?

I don’t have a specific role model. There are many designers whose work I admire, but as for a real role model, I really cannot say.

What motivates you?

I’m motivated by my will to finish the work we have started, and carry out our original vision. I want to see all the work and the enormous mental and financial investments bearing fruit. I wish to see my company succeed!

What is your opinion on crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is an interesting and relatively new way of funding. Tunto Design’s products speak to people, and I believe that many people would like to be part of our success story and participate in bringing Finnish design to the global markets. With our know-how and networks, we are able to come up with interesting and groundbreaking lighting solutions.

Give us three reasons why people should invest in Tunto Design?

1.     Tunto Design is already an internationally known company. Together we can build a globally strong and successful brand.

2.     With our collection and know-how, Tunto Design can carry out large-scale projects and is ready and willing to raise its market share on this sector.

3.     Tunto is a growing company and a trendsetter as a producer of wooden LED lights.
